Great food is of prime importance at The Malt Shovel and it is the very best
reason to visit us.
Jürg trained at the world-renowned Hotel Richemond in Geneva before coming to
England in 1967 and his grounding in the French Classic tradition is evident throughout
his cooking.
His expertise in classic sauces, his insistence on the finest raw ingredients
and his many years of culinary experience at the highest levels create a unique
menu which is bursting with flavour and inventiveness.
Jürg is joined in the kitchen by our 3-strong team. Our bread is baked daily
on the premises using local unbleached flour and, across the entire menu, the
team produces food of exceptional quality and integrity.
Our commitment to the finest food is evident in our choice of suppliers. We have an
excellent fishmonger who delivers every day, enabling us to offer an exciting fresh
fish menu that changes on a daily basis.We place weekly orders with a man who
travels regularly to the markets of France for those slightly more unusual ingredients
but the most exciting recent development is Anna and D'Arcy's move to Holme Bottom Farm. From here, Anna and D'Arcy intend to keep the kitchen supplied with as much
home-grown produce as this idyllic small-holding can provide. The chicken and
sheep have arrived and are settling in well and the Gloucester Old Spot piglets
are expected any day now. Our Holme Bottom eggs, lamb and pork will be second
to none.
We are delighted to announce the launch of our New Bistro Menu. Written on the blackboard in the bar, it offers fantastic value for money with
prices starting at just £4.95 and includes dishes such as our famous Oxtail &
Kidney Pudding, Fish and Chips, Calves' Liver & Bacon, and Fresh Fish Cakes. This
menu is proving extremely popular and is available at Lunch and weekday dinners.
We have also, over the last few months, been formulating beautiful, authentic
Thai dishes reflecting our love of the wonderfully fresh ingredients and vibrant
flavours that encapsulate this cuisine. We now offer a selection of dishes on
the menu that reflect Thai food at its very best, using only the absolutely freshest
and very best ingredients.
The "Weeping Tiger" (using prime "Givendale" Beef Fillet) is a sensational new
addition to our menu. We look forward to welcoming chilli-addicts everywhere!
