From the moment you enter this 16th-Century building in the heart of Brearton, you will be confronted by the ancient oak beams and wonderful log fires that give this country pub its character.
With a bar that was created from old church panelling many years ago, fireplaces that were rediscovered and brought back to life in 2006, and pianos that get to accompany the finest singers, The Malt Shovel is crammed with unique character and charm.
There are several different eating areas and everyone has their particular favourite which we do our very best to accommodate when arranging seating plans.
The Monkey is the area by the kitchen door with the big open fire. It is a popular choice for those who wish to keep an eye on the bar and an ear on Jürg’s kitchen!
The Red Room has become an opulent area where operatic paraphernalia sits happily alongside musical scores and D’Arcy and Anna’s old programmes from their previous shows. It has a warm and intimate atmosphere.
The Green Room has an elegance that lends itself to slightly larger dinner parties. Our beautiful, big, old tables seem to encourage those long, memorable evenings of fine food, fine wine and hearty company.
Our light, airy conservatory is a relatively recent addition to The Malt Shovel. With its piano, ferns and lemon tree, the atmosphere is one of balmy calm and a retrospective ambience that can easily be converted into an area that seats up to 30 on one spectacular table.
On those warm summer evenings, please feel free to enjoy a meal or simply a large glass of Rosé under the large Laurent-Perrier parasols in our outside area adjacent to the conservatory.
With Jane and D’Arcy front of house, Anna at the Piano, our locals at the bar, the restaurant alive with smells of Jürg’s wonderful food, and the sounds of convivial company, dining at The Malt Shovel is an experience that you will want to repeat time after time.
