From the moment you enter this 16th-Century building in the heart of Brearton, you will be confronted by the ancient oak beams, big leather chairs, flag stone floors and wonderful open fires that give this country pub its character. With the original bar that was created from old church panelling, fireplaces that were rediscovered and brought back to life in 2006, and pianos that get to accompany the finest singers, The Malt Shovel is crammed with unique character and charm and has several defined areas.
The Monkey is the area by the kitchen door with the big open fire. With its big leather sofa and armchair, it is the perfect place for that first gin and tonic of the night and for those who wish to keep an eye on the bar and an ear on Jürg’s kitchen!
The Red Room is a cosy area with a warm and intimate atmosphere. It is becoming a firm favourite with those who look for a more private dining experience.
The Green Room has an elegance that lends itself to slightly larger dinner parties. Our beautiful, big, old tables seem to encourage those long, memorable evenings of fine food, fine wine and hearty company.
Our light, airy conservatory is a relatively recent addition to The Malt Shovel. With its piano, ferns and draped ceiling, the atmosphere is one of balmy calm yet it is a room with great flexibility that can easily be converted into an area that seats up to 30 on one spectacular table.
If the Restaurant is full, you are more than welcome to eat in the bar (or Garden, during the summer months), where we serve the same menu as the Restaurant. We do not take reservations in the bar, but please feel free to join us during the usual opening hours.
The Malt Shovel is one of those places that many customers find by accident yet we are delighted that they choose to return to us time after time, knowing they have discovered Yorkshire's little secret.
