Painting and planning!

We’ve been having a bit of a spruce up this week. D’Arcy has finished painting the conservatory and the Green Room and Jurg has been putting up a wall of mirrors, so let there be light. We have a lovely new menu featuring fabulous Potted Pork, from our own Gloucester Old Spot pigs, Duck with Orange Sauce and a Spring Fruit Flummery. We’re also in the planning stages for some summer events. What would everyone think to a Call My Quaff wine quiz, a Musical Extravaganza for the Olympics or a special Taste of Switzerland Evening for Swiss National Day? In the meantime we’ve got one of our ever-popular Opera Nights coming up on June 25th, and hopefully a bit of a celebration for the Diamond Jubilee. Any other ideas gratefully received…

A memorable moment from our last opera night

Park and ride

We’re launching our new taxi offer this weekend. We’re very excited to offer a free taxi home for diners in a party of four or more (or two people with a total spend of over £80) to either Ripon, Harrogate or Knaresborough. Plus, if you book in advance, we can also offer customers a discounted taxi to The Malt Shovel. We’re hoping to entice lots of new diners to our lovely inn, just a short drive from Harrogate, but also give a little extra to our regulars. Come for a relaxing meal in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside, without having to find a designated driver!

Clement weather

It’s been gorgeous in North Yorkshire today and apparently we can expect more sunshine tomorrow. We’re so lucky to be surrounded by beautiful countryside and great places for days out. If you enjoy a long walk of a weekend, here’s a link to The Knaresborough Round, which will take most of a day. But, if you like your walks with a culinary incentive, as I do, great thing is, stroll just a part of it, and you can pop to The Malt Shovel for a spot of lunch, before meandering back the way you came. Either way, lovely use of a Sunday. http://bit.ly/AuFfn0

Busy, busy

The Malt Shovel was buzzing at lunchtime today. We think it must be the weather that got everyone in the mood for a country pub lunch this Thursday. Lots of happy, smiley customers enjoying Jurg’s fabulous food – the new sandwiches seemed to be going down very well, as was the fish & chips. Won’t be long now til we get some really decent weather for sitting outside. We’re only 10 minutes outside Harrogate, but it feels a world away from the bustle of town.

Back to basics

There’s good news for fans of Jurg’s fabulous food – he’s back in the kitchen. We’ve also got a new streamlined menu, featuring chicken with lemon and thyme, wild mushroom ravioli and confit of belly pork with black pudding, plus all the Malt Shovel classics. We’ve had lots of happy satisfied customers, which is just how we like it.

Opera night

We had a wonderfully successful opera night on Monday. Six fantastic professional singers entertained a restaurant full of happy diners, one of whom was serenaded with a spectacular Happy Birthday. We have another opera night on the 19th of December, which would make a perfect pre-Christmas treat, plus plenty of other Christmas events to get you feeling festive. Have a look at the events list on our main site.

Ticket to ride

Have you heard about our new dinner with taxi service? For just £35 per person, you get a gourmet 3-course meal and a taxi from and to home. The menu is available lunchtimes or evenings to customers in the Harrogate, Ripon and Knaresborough areas, and the surrounding villages. It’s already proving a great success. Call us to find out more.

Plenty of news!

Lots of new things have been happening at The Malt Shovel. We have a fantastic new chef, Mark Shepherd, who joined us last month and has put his own stamp on our fabulous food. We are so happy to welcome him, and he’s already become a vital part of our team.

With our new chef, we have also added to our menu (although you’ll still find all your old favourites when you visit). We now have a delicious new ‘Comfort Zone’ section, which includes timeless classics, such as fish & chips and our incredible burger, plus ‘Pie of the Day’, with gorgeous fillngs, such as brisket and red wine. As always there are daily fish specials to choose from as well.

Plus, we now have two new fires blazing. To add to the cosy atmosphere, particularly now that the evenings are growing chillier, we have opened up two more of the old fireplaces in our restaurant rooms. Just come and see, they look simply fabulous.

Well it’s chilly but The Malt Shovel fires are blazing!

The last week or two has been a bit of a challenge in Brearton. Jurg has been gratefully accepting the help of our friendly local farmer and together they have managed to keep the roads of Brearton salted and gritted. We are now entering our very busiest time and we look forward to welcoming you all over the Christmas period ahead.

A Cumberland Sausage to die for!

Have you tried Jurg’s new sausage? As part of our new set-price menu, Jurg has created the perfect Cumberland- using meat from our own pigs of course! It won’t be there for ever as our menu will be changing again soon, but it is well worth the trip. It is perfect sausage & mash weather after all.

Our set price menu is £12.95 for 2 courses and £15.95 for 3 and is centred on produce from The Malt Shovel farm.
